چکیده

We compared the quality of prediction of word variables based on a Dutch word association and text corpus. We derived estimates for: valence, arousal, dominance, concreteness and age of acquisition (AoA) for 2831 words. Based on the similarity between words we: (1) used projections on a dimension identified as the variable in question in a multidimensional representation, (2) used the k-nearest neighbors values, weighted according to their proximity. Estimates prevailed when based on word associations. Differences between the predictions of the two methods were small. Based on the word association corpus it yielded correlations of .92, .85, and .85, for valence, arousal, and dominance, respectively. Its corresponding correlations based on the text corpus were .80, .74, and .67. For concreteness and AoA, both the association and the text corpus yielded correlations of .88 and .73, respectively. This suggests word associations are better at capturing human ratings of affective word variables.

Comparing Lexical Relationships Observed within Japanese Collocation Data and Japanese Word Association Norms

While large-scale corpora and various corpus query tools have long been recognized as essential language resources, the value of word association norms as language resources has been largely overlooked. This paper conducts some initial comparisons of the lexical relationships observed within Japanese collocation data extracted from a large corpus using the Japanese language version of the Sketc...

Lexical and Grammatical Collocations in Writing Production of EFL Learners

Lewis (1993) recognized significance of word combinations including collocations by presenting lexical approach. Because of the crucial role of collocation in vocabulary acquisition, this research set out to evaluate the rate of collocations in Iranian EFL learners' writing production across L1 and L2. In addition, L1 interference with L2 collocational use in the learner' writing samples was st...

Combining Collocations, Lexical and Encyclopedic Knowledge for Metonymy Resolution

This paper presents a supervised method for resolving metonymies. We enhance a commonly used feature set with features extracted based on collocation information from corpora, generalized using lexical and encyclopedic knowledge to determine the preferred sense of the potentially metonymic word using methods from unsupervised word sense disambiguation. The methodology developed addresses one is...
